Could AI be deepening the divide between the haves and the have-nots? Inspired by @Christina Tueje's LinkedIn post, I join the conversation on AI and its impacts on inequality.

Does Artificial Intelligence (AI) Create Inequality? This was the question asked by @Christina Tueje which prompted me to share my view (see her post here).

My response:
I was looking for a fourth option in this poll; 'All of the above'.  Let me explain my thinking on this. 🧠

⏪⏩1. We already have a huge digital divide - the rapid adoption of generative AI absolutely does widen it.
I still marvel to myself how on the one hand there are clients that have people with the bare minimum of digital skills required to do their job; and on the other there are those that are on-top of the latest in tech and how they might use said tech to make life (and work) easier for themselves.

♎ 2. Simultaneously, large language models such as ChatGPT et al also serve as an equaliser, e.g.
- in the UK for those where English is not their first language and they have a low level of proficiency; it can assist with making themselves understood and more professional writing.
- for those that lack Google-fu; LLMs can surface information that they wouldn't come across otherwise.
- for those who struggle to learn something new; LLMs are great at breaking down concepts and presenting the information in a way that helps the individual understand (explaining through analogies is particularly powerful).

💥 3.  The element of harm is, in some ways no different to any other tool.  In other ways it is more insidious; pervading so many aspects of our lives as companies fall over themselves to keep up. Regardless, we need to learn how to use GenAI safely and effectively; taking time to understand both the opportunities and limits.
Most importantly, we need to be cognisant that there will ALWAYS be those that look to subvert and exploit such tools for their own gain (whether that be financial, kudos, or otherwise).  🦹‍♂️

🐴 As an industry, information and cybersecurity really have our work cut out... the horse has well and truly bolted and we're barely clinging onto the reins; along for the ride whether we choose to or not.
